When I first heard that you could make money blogging, I thought you had to be crazy good at writing, or have some sort of business degree. But, after making my first sale online, I am finally beginning to believe those other bloggers who say that ANYONE can make money blogging!
(If you’d like to start your own blog to make a bit of side income, check out this helpful guide!)
Why am I sharing my blog income reports?
First of all, income reports hold such valuable information for me as a blogger. It’s an easy way to break down everything I’ve done this month, and allows me to get an idea of what’s working (and what’s not).
Also, I know some bloggers like to wait until they are making a massive amount of money from their blog before sharing their income reports, I want to share mine from early on.
It can be nerve-wracking sharing your income reports online, especially as a new blogger because nobody wants to fail in front of their readers. To wait until you are really making money from your blog seems like the safe thing to do, because then you are already successful and don’t have to worry about failing, you know?
But, whether I fail or not, I want to help you guys. If I do become successful from this, I want you guys to see everything I did. And if I fail and make no money, then you can see what I did that month that wasn’t so good.
Either way, it’s a learning experience, and I think it’s worth taking a moment to show it to everyone.
So, if you’re just starting out and wanting to learn how to make money from your own blog, hopefully you find some sort of usefulness from these reports!
Traffic is one of the most important factors to consider when it comes to blog success and blog growth.
To say I was surprised at how much traffic I got this month would be a total understatement. Literally, I was doing a big ole’ happy dance when I got online and saw that my blog had reached nearly 2,000 page views in one day. That’s huge! Especially when I was getting less than 50 views a week before.
Pretty much all of that traffic came from Pinterest. More specifically, this post on Pinterest, which currently has over 2k pins! I’m still in shock, honestly. It’s gone baby viral in my eyes, haha!
As you can see, June 7th is when my views went from 50 to almost 275. I’m guessing someone with a lot of followers pinned the post and it was kind of a snowball effect from there. Nearly all of my page views were from that one post, which peaks on June 13th and slowly declines.
My takeaway from this:
While it is fantastic that my post was seen and shared with so many people, it is a little disappointing that my page views went back down after those first few days. So this month my goal is to keep those numbers going up!
I don’t want my page views to increase when one post goes baby viral and drop back down. I want people to keep coming back!
Achieving that goal will require me to start really working on an e-mail list (which I did grow through the week of the 7th-15th! Wahoo!) and to post more quality content. Part of this will come with time, but I also need to really re-vamp some of my current posts. Which brings me to my next point…
Okay, I kind of dropped the ball on posting this month.
In my first month blogging, I posted roughly 3 times a week. Not only did that turn out to be way too much for me and my schedule, I wasn’t posting quality content. And since then, I’ve gone through and either deleted or changed those low-quality posts, which means hurriedly putting a post together was a huge waste of time.
However, it did teach me a big lesson. Never again will I post something just to get a new post out there.
If you are a new blogger, learn from my mistake and create quality content from the get-go! Know your limits- if posting 5 days a week is too much for you, don’t hurriedly throw something together just to get it out there. I promise your readers would rather read one good, lengthy post rather than 5 low-quality ones.
Now that I know more of what I can handle as far as a posting schedule, I am shooting for two posts a month. That’s was my goal for this month (which I did!) and it seems much more manageable.
Most Popular Posts in June:
This month’s popular posts are very interesting, as they are all from the same category! Part of this is probably due to the fact that I included links to both #2 and #3 in post #1. Or it could just be coincidence. Either way, seeing these kinds of correlations help me decide on what topics I should continue covering over the next few months.
Also, I want go back to what I said just a second ago and point out the importance of including links to your other, relevant blog posts in each post you have. ALL of these posts are linked to one another, because they are all relevant to each other. Linking back to one another essentially keeps readers cycling through my posts, and it’s all about cycling back to your other posts, people! Make sure it’s is relevant and natural though, don’t try to force an unrelated post in!
Another thing I want to mention is that, as you create new posts, make sure to go back to your old ones and link back to your newer content, as it lets people who are looking at some of your old posts be redirected to your newer stuff, and as time goes on all of your old posts can still have life through each other.
Finally, my income for the month!
Originally, this blog was meant to be more of a creative outlet rather than a source of income for me, but hey, who says you can’t do both, right? Now that I know it is actually possible to earn money from blogging, I would like to continue to see growth and improvement. You can bet your rear-end that I’m researching like crazy how to do this! Although I’m still learning the ropes, it is getting easier.
Here’s a breakdown of where I got my income this month:
Amazon Affiliate: $2.95
As you can see, traffic really correlates with earnings, because I didn’t really see any interaction with Amazon until that spike in page views.
I love the Amazon Associates Reports. I didn’t show all of it here, but they even have what was ordered and the product link conversion! That really shows me what’s working well, and I even changed this post here to include something someone bought from my link that wasn’t in my post. Now that item has sold a few more times!
Swagbucks isn’t something I’ve really promoted on this blog yet, just because it doesn’t really fit into any post I’ve done so far. Actually, this money came from me doing surveys through them!
Google Adsense: $0.72
I’m a little disappointed in Google Adsense and their payout. You have to reach $100 before you can cash out your earnings, and once (if, ha) I hit that I may discontinue them. I would love to switch to a place like Adthrive, but I have not quite reached the 100,000 monthly traffic limit. Maybe someday!
One thing I definitely want to work on next time is Bluehost– that’s where a lot of bloggers make their money because it is such a big payout. So in July I would like to go back and rewrite my How to Start a Blog (In Just 15 Minutes!) post, because honestly this was my 2nd or 3rd post and I had no idea what I was doing, haha! Hopefully that changes this number next month!
Okay, so not a huge payout this month, but hopefully this number will increase over time. Either way, I’m ecstatic that I even made this much from blogging!
Goals for July
- Create an Archives page. This will help me keep up with all of my posts organized in one place and make it easier for people to navigate my blog
- Reach 25,000 page views on the blog. Currently I’m at roughly 11,000, so I think this is a big number to aim for, but I think it is still obtainable.
- Have 25 people sign up for my e-mail list. Again, this seems like a big number, but it’s possible to hit it!
- Put up 2 blog posts this month.
- Rewrite How to Set Up a Blog (In Just 15 Minutes!) and some other posts.
- Earn $50 from this blog. Getting my first taste of earning an income from blogging has really made me want to work harder for more, so we’ll see what happens!
These all seem reasonably obtainable, and I have a really good feeling about July. Hopefully this helped you in your own blogging endeavors, if you have any questions just ask below! I’d be happy to help!
